Vakka-Suomi Hospital belongs to the Intermunicipal Hospital District of Southwest Finland and it is a part of the Turku University Hospital The hospital offers specialized care services to the inhabitants in its area. There are approx. 33 000 inhabitants in the area.

The patients come to the hospital referred by a physician from the health care centre, the occupational health care or from the private sector. There is a 24 h emergency service.

History in brief

Psychiatric activities begun in 1916 (Lounais-Suomen piirimielisairashoitola), in 1936 the name was changed into Uudenkaupungin piirimielisairaala, in 1956 into Vakka-Suomen piirisairaala, in 1978 into Uudenkaupungin sairaala.

Somatic activities were begun in 1936 as Uudenkaupungin seudun sairaala, from where the activities were moved in 1971 to Vakka-Suomen aluesairaala.

In 1994 the psychiatric and somatic activities were merged into Vakka-Suomen sairaala.

In 2007 the somatic activities of the hospital were merged with the Turku University Hospital and the psychiatric activities with the psychiatric division of the hospital district.
